Sweynesse Wins 2014 Newcastle Spring Stakes

September 17th, 2014

Opening and maintaining status as clear favourite for success in Wednesday’s three-year-old feature, classy Godolphin runner Sweynesse has displayed a keen turn of foot to win the Group 3 Newcastle Spring Stakes (1600m) by a comfortable half-length.

Jumping from the gates fairly the Lonhro colt settled near the tail of the field; allowing the early leaders to set a notably quick pace over the back straight and rounding the bend.

Pushed wide by leading jockey Kerrin McEvoy upon finding the final straight, Sweynesse slowly spooled up and began what would be an exceptional sprint; breaking clear of his rivals with 150m left to run and finding the line clear of a fast-finishing Pounamu; Monteux running on for third.

On hand to witness his impressive maiden appearance in a black type event, Godolphin Racing Manager Jason Walsh was understandably pleased with Sweynesse’s performance in the 2014 Newcastle Spring Stakes and underlined the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) on October 11th as the likely major target this time in.

“Huge thrill – first Stakes winner for Godolphin with a permanent presence in Australia and it’s a huge thrill for the whole team,”

“Typical of the Lonhro’s, every time we raise the bar he jumps it, so we had the Spring Champion in mind for him; it was dependant on him performing in Stakes grade today which he’s done and done impressively.

“His mother was a very stout mare so there’s plenty of staying there in the pedigree, so 2000m should pose no problem and very exciting horse for us.

“There’s not many Lonhro’s that do get passed the mile, but as I say just that kind of horse we haven’t got anywhere near the bottom of yet.”

In winning the 2014 Newcastle Spring Stakes, Sweynesse has continued a perfect career start which delivered back-to-back victories in the Blue Gum Forest 2.y.o Maiden (1400m) and TAB Early Quaddie Handicap (1400m) prior.
