2010 Spring Stakes Nominations Include Melbourne Cup Hopefuls Alcopop & Rebel Raider

August 10th, 2010

The premier race of the spring season in South Australia is set to take place this Saturday as Allan Scott Park Morphettville hosts the $115,000 Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m).

This year 18 classy sprinters have been nominated for the 2010 Spring Gully Spring Stakes, including a number of horses heading towards a run in the 150th Melbourne Cup at Flemington on Tuesday November 2.

Leading the entries for the Spring Stakes and sure to dominate the Ladbrokes.com.au markets is six-year-old gelding Alcopop.

The Jake Stephens-trained Jeune galloper is one of the top 20 horses in the ante-post betting markets for the Melbourne Cup, currently paying $26 at leading online bookmaker Ladbrokes.com.au.

Alcopop ran a gallant sixth in the Melbourne Cup last year and a good barrier draw will ensure he is a strong chance in Saturday’s Spring Stakes.

The other Spring Stakes runner on their way towards the Melbourne Cup is local Adelaide favourite Rebel Raider.

Trained by Leon MacDonald and Andrew Gluyas, five-year-old Rebel Raider is having their first-up spring start on Saturday and is currently paying $31 at Ladbrokes.com.au to win the 2010 Melbourne Cup.

Esteemed Melbourne Cup winning trainer Mark Kavanagh has nominated four horses for the 2010 Spring Stakes with We’re Gonna Rock, Sound Journey, Navmann and Puttanesca.

Other top 2010 Spring Stakes entries include Peter Moody’s smart mare Avenue and Wakeful Stakes runner-up Silent Surround.

The final field of Spring Stakes acceptances will be announced later in the week and published here, so bookmark this page and check out our preview and form guide before placing your bets.
